
5W-30 is an SAE multigrade viscosity classification. The 5W part shows that the oil meets defined low-temperature cranking and pumping limits for that winter grade. The 30 part shows that it meets viscosity limits for an SAE 30 grade at high operating temperatures. Neither number is a direct ambient-temperature reading.
How to read 5W-30

Engine oil changes viscosity with temperature: it is thicker when cold and thinner when hot. A multigrade oil is formulated to satisfy both a winter-grade requirement and a high-temperature grade, helping it circulate during a cold start while retaining the required viscosity when the engine is hot.
Is 5W-30 thinner than 10W-30?
Both oils meet the SAE 30 high-temperature grade, but 5W-30 meets a lower winter-grade requirement than 10W-30. That comparison does not mean every 5W-30 product has identical chemistry or identical viscosity at every temperature. Base oils, viscosity modifiers and additive packages differ.

These are classifications, not recommendations. A higher number is not automatically “more protection,” and a lower number is not automatically “better efficiency” for every engine.
Viscosity grade is only part of the label
Two bottles can both say 5W-30 yet carry different performance approvals. Check the owner's manual for the required viscosity grade, API service category, manufacturer approval and any regional or duty-cycle instructions. The API service symbol displays the viscosity grade separately from the service category because they answer different questions.
Can you substitute another grade?
Do not choose a substitute solely from a generic climate chart or because an engine is older. Some manuals permit alternatives for defined temperature ranges; others require a specific grade and approval. Oil pressure, variable valve timing, turbocharger lubrication, emissions equipment and fuel-economy calibration may depend on the specified oil. Use the manual for the exact model, engine and model year, or obtain manufacturer guidance.

- Does 5W-30 mean synthetic oil? No. The viscosity label does not by itself identify whether the base oil is conventional, synthetic blend or full synthetic.
- Does W mean weight? No. In this classification it denotes the winter grade.
- Is 5W-30 always suitable for cold weather? Suitability depends on the manufacturer's permitted grades and the actual operating conditions.
- Can all 5W-30 oils be mixed or interchanged? The shared viscosity grade does not prove that every required performance specification or approval matches.
